The challenge with subscription-based wellness apps is often found at the intersection of user intent and financial commitment. For Focus, a brain-training platform dedicated to sharpening attention, the primary goal was to design a paywall that felt less like a toll booth and more like a logical next step in the user’s self-improvement journey. I wanted to replace the standard, high-pressure sales pitch with a guided experience that mirrors the app’s core promise: clarity, calm, and purposeful action.
The foundation of this design is a four-part narrative carousel that shifts the focus from what the app costs to what the user gains. Instead of presenting a single, static screen that demands an immediate decision, I utilized a progressive disclosure model. This allows users to digest specific benefits, such as neuroscientist-backed training and ad-free flow states, at their own pace. By the time a user reaches the final slide, they have moved through a series of micro-commitments that build trust and reinforce the value of the premium experience.

To reduce the mental fatigue often associated with financial decisions, I applied several behavioral psychology principles to the pricing architecture. I implemented price anchoring by placing the original cost in direct contrast with the discounted rate, immediately establishing a high perceived value. To further simplify the choice, the annual plan is highlighted as the preferred option, reducing the paralysis of choice by providing a clear “Most Popular” nudge. This is supported by a risk-reversal call to action (“Try it for free”) which removes the immediate barrier to entry and allows the user to experience the product’s worth firsthand.
Design in a brain-training context must be inherently low-friction. The layout maintains generous whitespace to avoid overstimulating the user during a high-stakes decision point. The experience is enriched by subtle micro-animations in the headers, designed to reward exploration and keep the user engaged without causing distraction. The result is a seamless transition from onboarding to subscription that respects the user’s cognitive space while driving sustainable business growth.
