The objective of this project was to design a non-intrusive yet highly effective update prompt for a mobile application. Rather than treating an app update as a mandatory interruption, the goal was to frame it as an opportunity for the user to access enhanced value and improved performance. By balancing clear communication with user autonomy, the final design ensures that the update process feels like a natural extension of the user journey rather than a technical hurdle.
The core of the experience resides in a bottom-sheet modal, a choice rooted in modern mobile ergonomics. By anchoring the prompt at the bottom of the screen, the design respects the natural “thumb zone,” making the primary interaction effortless for the user. This approach keeps the current application state visible in the background, maintaining the user’s sense of context while a subtle background dimming is applied to focus attention on the update message. This visual hierarchy reduces cognitive load and clearly signals that a temporary decision is required without the jarring experience of a full-screen takeover.

Visual clarity is achieved through a mix of familiar iconography and concise, benefit-driven copy. A centralized download icon acts as an immediate signifier, allowing users to identify the purpose of the popup before they even begin to read. The headline, “New update available,” provides instant clarity, while the supporting subtext shifts the narrative from a technical requirement to a value proposition. By inviting users to “enjoy our newest features,” the design encourages a positive emotional response to the update, framing it as a gift of improved functionality rather than a chore.
A critical aspect of the UX was the treatment of the calls-to-action. To drive the desired business outcome, the “Update the app” button is rendered with high contrast and significant scale, making it the most prominent element on the screen. However, maintaining a positive long-term user experience requires respecting user intent. This is addressed by including a low-emphasis “Not now” text link. By intentionally de-prioritizing the dismissal option, the design ensures the update remains the primary path while still offering users the freedom to continue their current task uninterrupted, ultimately building trust and reducing frustration.
